The Mazda MX-30 R-EV is a plug-in puzzle that Americans might not get


Mazda on Friday unveiled its extended-range version of the MX-30 electric vehicle, dubbed the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV

The MX-30 R-EV would offer a much longer range than the MX-30 EV’s 100 EPA miles. But as Mazda USA hinted earlier this week, this is the model that was previously confirmed for the US may be delayed or canceled altogether.

The R-EV is almost indistinguishable from that MX-30EV apart from some equipment differences. That means you get the same rather eccentric package – a compact crossover with a slightly sleeker roofline and two smaller rear hinged doors. Mazda boasts that using a rotary engine instead of a reciprocating engine allows for more compact packaging and saves weight. The engine’s side casing is aluminum rather than iron, according to Mazda, which Mazda says will save more than 33 pounds. That’s different from the only other range-extended electric vehicle on the US market in recent years BMW i3 RExwhich could sometimes be caught flat-footed on long motorway descents and had little power if its small two-cylinder range extender under the loading floor could not keep up.

The shrill sound of a rotary engine revving up is enchanting, but any RX-8 or RX-7 sports car owner can attest that rotary engines are less than endearing on long road trips

There also seems to be a gray area where the engine will start itself on a charge – a serious concern for anyone expecting a true EV driving experience around town.

Mazda says that in EV mode the R-EV uses electric propulsion exclusively “until the gauges show the battery is completely discharged.” It also notes in EV mode: “Additionally in situations like when the when the driver suddenly has to accelerate and intentionally depresses the accelerator significantly past a certain point (equivalent to the kickdown switch function on a standard automatic transmission vehicle), the rotary motor generator is activated and the energy for the required power is generated.”

In Normal mode, Mazda says the Wankel engine starts more often depending on how far you press the gas pedal. Separately, there is also a charging mode that can save charge, allowing owners to drive quietly in EV mode or later use the car to power devices. Owners can set how much they want to charge in 10 percent increments

The MX-30 R-EV’s 7.2 kW onboard charger – more than the 6.6 kW unit that ships with US MX-30 EVs – can go from 20 to 20 minutes in about 90 minutes % can be charged to 80%. according to Mazda. It’s unclear if that 20% charge is the low end for pure electric operation. It is also one of the few vehicles of this type with DC fast charging, which in the case of the R-EV operates at up to 36 kW and allows a 20% to 80% charge in around 25 minutes.

The R-EV supports V2L and has a 1500 watt load compartment socket.

It will be launched first in an Edition R version, which will offer a rotary engine-inspired design, Mazda says – with rouge metallic and black roof accents for the body and trim.

This includes unique wheels, as well as several nods to the unique trochoidal shape of the engine’s rotor motion, including a logo that adds an orange accent “to convey the power needed to generate energy,” Mazda says

Mazda hasn’t confirmed the price for Europe yet, but it does suggest it won’t cost much, if at all, more than the MX-30 EV. “Larger batteries are more expensive, so using a battery would result in a more expensive vehicle,” the product information provided reads. “Also, a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) requires the optimization of the battery capacity for the vehicle.”

Now that it’s outlined for what it is and what the specs look like, it’s not just a head scratcher that Americans might not understand when they’re looking for vehicles, but a vehicle that Americans literally don’t get.
