In October 2022, BMW announced plans to expand Casual video games to cars with iDrive 8. If you’re looking for a different kind of entertainment while killing time, there’s an over-the-air update coming for the 7 Series G70, bringing on-demand content from the Bundesliga. The pilot program will initially be launched in Germany and is scheduled to run until March 31, 2024.

Football fans who follow the Bundesliga and own BMW’s latest flagship can rejoice when the game between RB Leipzig and FC Bayern will be broadcast live on January 20th. To benefit from the video streaming feature, you need to activate your personal eSIM. The app is pushed onto the vehicle overnight. The customer starts the car and the app appears under entertainment apps. It should be a silky-smooth stream on the 14.9-inch curved display, as the sedan’s built-in antenna supports a 5G connection.

By now you’re probably thinking that watching a football game on the car’s screen while driving is a massive distraction and therefore a major hazard. That’s definitely true, which is why the video stream only works if the 7 series is stationary. Once you get going, it will turn off automatically, but not completely as the audio stream will still work.

A nice feature is called “In-Match Highlights”, which are automatically generated during the game using artificial intelligence. Specially optimized for in-car use, it relies on AI algorithms to recognize key game moments and make them available as short clips with English commentary. The Bundesliga in-car app also contains summaries of the matchdays, a further development of the app is planned.

After the start in Germany, the Bundesliga in-car app will be introduced in Austria and Switzerland shortly thereafter. In the medium term, BMW wants to roll out the free OTA update in Great Britain and the USA, with Asian countries to follow at a later date. Another piece of good news is that while it only works on the 7 Series for now, newly launched models will offer access to the on-demand service.
