Personal luxury coupes die out quickly. in the â€ک80s and â€ک90s, they were at their peak; nearly every premium manufacturer had several options in the category. Car manufacturers from all over the world wanted to enter this segment and in Europe the Germans gave us icons like the original BMW 8 Series and Mercedes Benz CL.

But even if the 8 Series remains in 2023, it’s not what it used to be, and neither is the personal luxury coupe as a concept. Sure, BMW still offers a traditional one 8 Series Coupebut it’s easily outbid by the four-doors Gran coupe. The personal luxury coupé as we know it is changing.

There’s a reason for that. Americans just don’t want two-door cars. We have no interest. Think about how few real coupés are actually for sale at the moment. They serve no real practical purpose in our current automotive landscape. So if you want to sell a coupe, you have to sell a sedan and pretend to.

Full Disclosure: BMW was kind enough to lend me this BMW 840i Gran Coupe with a full tank of gas so I could do whatever I wanted for a long weekend in Northeast Pennsylvania.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe gives you a lot that the standard coupe doesn’t. First, you get two extra doors and slightly more room for rear seat occupants. The Gran Coupe is by no means spacious, but you can fit three bridesmaids in the back seats without much trouble. (During my testing, I was at a wedding.) Plus, the rear doors offer all the luxuries you’d expect from a full-size car, like power window blinds (pawn blocks) that cover the glass of your frameless windows. Also: More cars should have frameless windows.

You get one with the Gran Coupé too very long wheelbase that allows for decent legroom. The 840i Gran Coupé measures 200 inches in length throughout, of which 119 are between the front and rear wheels. That’s an increase of 9 inches and 8 inches respectively over the standard 2-door coupe. No, the rear legroom isn’t what I’d call ample, but these bridesmaids were able to get by with it.

No problem at the front. I’m just over 6’1 and have no issues with head, knee or shoulder room. You can set the driver’s seat nice and low, and it really does feel like it’s you in the 840i GC instead of on it.

Those sizeable exterior dimensions mean this car occupies those all Parking spot. But that’s okay, because the 840i Gran Coupé has charisma and presence in abundance. No one will bump into your car with the door. At least not better.

The little engine that could

In a world of high power engines in big boats like this, BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged B58 inline-6 stands out. It makes just 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque — 188 and 185 less than the V8-powered M850i, respectively — and yet it never feels the tiniest sluggish or unrefined.

Big luxury cars like this often put their engine at the heart of the vehicle, but that’s not the case with the 840i. The 3.0-litre straight-six just shuts up and propels you along at a very reasonable pace. Actually no, it is more than sufficient. Although the 840i weighs more than an untimely mother-in-law joke, it still sprints to 60mph in 4.9 seconds. That’s pretty quick for a £4,300 sedan.

While the 840i is truly destined to munch on motorway miles, it’s not sluggish in the corners. I wouldn’t call it that the most sporty vehicle I’ve ever driven, but for something of this size it holds up very well. The turbocharged engine flows beautifully up and down the rev range, the eight-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. Put the 840i in Sport mode and steering weight increases, as does throttle response. It’s just enough to make a boring back-road ride a little more enjoyable, and isn’t that exactly what BMW is all about?

This small engine makes the 840i the most affordable model in the 8 Series. You can step up to the aforementioned M850i ​​Gran Coupe, where you get a big turbocharged V8, but it also costs $103,495. From there you have the M8 competition and Alpine B8, which start at $135,095 and $145,895 respectively (including $995 for the target). As tested, the 840i Gran Coupe you see here costs $95,495 and doesn’t skimp on luxury.

Because the engine isn’t the focal point of this car, it just takes a back seat, allowing you to enjoy the 840i as it is: the luxury cruiser. All is kind. Even gimmicks like the optional crystal start button, shifter, and iDrive control knob are nice little touches. I only have one problem with these things: every now and then the sun hits them just right and creates a prism that hits me right in the eye. This is not ideal for driving.

The rest of the interior is typical BMW. It’s logical, it’s no frills (apart from the optional crystal) and will provide you with extremely comfortable wear over the long term. This is real personal luxury. Step into the 840i and your worries melt away, and that’s what these luxury coupes are all about. They are there to get you from point A to point B with very little effort. The 840i serves as a sanctuary.

There is also a whole range of technologies in the 8 series. You’ve got heated and cooled seats, a heads-up display, a 12.3-inch digital dash, ambient lighting you can change to your heart’s content, and all the other fixins. But for reasons I’ll never understand, the 840i doesn’t come standard with adaptive cruise control. This car starts at $87,500, and for that price I demand radar cruise control – something that’s standard on a $27,000 Honda Civic. I will not bow to that.

Aside from a beautiful and comfortable interior, a personal luxury coupe should also have a beautiful exterior. Fortunately, the BMW 840i Gran Coupé is distinctive and understated at the same time. If you compare it to other vehicles in the BMW fleet, the difference is stark. There is no oversized grille. No weird cuts and corners. It’s a cohesive design and, frankly, the Gran Coupe might actually look better than its traditional two-door coupe stablemate. If I had one complaint, it would be that BMW’s traditional Hofmeister kink is missing from the Gran Coupe’s design. Sorry I’m a purist.

The 840i Gran Coupé proves that while the personal luxury coupé segment isn’t what it used to be, the general vibe is still there. And if you think cars like the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz CLS are anathema to the automotive industry, then this review probably won’t change your mind. But think about it: when was the last time you saw someone drive a real two-door coupe version of one of these cars? I bet it’s been a while.

Sure, it has four doors, but the personal luxury coupe ethos lives on in the 840i Gran Coupé.
