The 2023 Jeep Avenger is crowned annual Car of the Year in Brussels


For the first time ever, a Jeep took top honors in the long-running Car of the Year awards announced on January 13 at the Brussels International Motor Show. This year’s winner is the new Jeep Avenger electric SUV, available in Europe, Japan and South Korea. It is not sold in North America.

The Avenger is also Jeep’s first all-electric vehicle. Debut last October, it uses a single motor rated at 154 horsepower (115 kilowatts) and 181 pound-feet (260 Newton-meters) of torque. It drives the front wheels, although a dual-motor Avenger is on the cards for a future four-wheel drive model. A 54kWh battery offers a range of 249 miles on the WLTP cycle, although that range could reach 342 miles in slower speed urban environments. It can be quickly charged via a 100kW port and go from 20 to 80 percent in 24 minutes.

In winning Car of the Year, the Avenger received a total of 328 votes, including 21 best votes from a 57-strong jury from 22 European countries. Other vehicles in the competition were the VW ID. Buzz, runner-up with 241 total votes and 16 top votes. Third was the Nissan Ariya with 211 votes making this year’s top 3 vehicles an all-electric podium for the second time in the awards’ history. Last year, the Kia EV6 took the overall win with the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 follow close behind.

Other contenders for the 2023 award were the Kia Niro, which puts combustion power in fourth place. The Renault Austral ended up in fifth place, followed by the Peugeot 408 and the Subaru Solterra / Toyota bZ4X Twins round out the seven finalists.

During jeep has no plans to bring the subcompact Avenger to the States. A larger electric vehicle will grace North America in the form of the enlightenment.
