The 2024 Nissan GT-R gets the most dramatic upgrade in 7 years with a new look and new aerodynamics


Following the mysterious disappearance from the US market for the 2022 model year, the nissan just as mysteriously reappeared completely unchanged for 2023. Now it’s back for 2024, with both cosmetic and performance upgrades across the range. Revealed at 2023 Tokyo Auto Salonit is the most dramatic change to Nissan supercar since the 2017 facelift. If that seems like a long time ago, it is, but this GT R has also been in circulation since the 2009 model year. Happy 15th GT-R.

Right off the bat, we see new front and rear fascias in all trims, starting with the base Premium. Gone is the V-Motion grille that’s been part of the GT-R’s mug for the past six years. The new nose is reminiscent of a wide radiator grille opening the Skyline GT-R of the R34 generationand the entire front bumper has been reshaped for a wider look with a row of funky hexagonal auxiliary headlights at each corner. Nissan says even the mesh pattern in the grille uses a thinner mesh to improve cooling and reduce drag.

A redesigned rear end offers character lines that take away some of the sheer cliff drop in the outgoing design. The iconic quad taillights also get a new lens design. Nissan says the combined aerodynamic improvements offer greater downforce while maintaining the 2023 car’s 0.26 Cd drag coefficient.

The GT-R retains the same powertrain as last year’s model, its 3.8 twin-turbo V6 putting out 565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and Nissan’s ATTESA electronic torque-split all-wheel drive system. A sleek titanium exhaust system comes standard with pre-blued exhaust tips.

For 2024, the T-Spec trim pictured above also returns. Last seen in 2021, it adds wider front fenders and carbon ceramic brake Trim rotors from the top dog Nismo. Also carrying over are the 20-inch forged Nismo’s Rays wheels in gold, wrapped in Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600 tires made from a Nismo-specific compound.

The T specification offers two exclusive exteriors Colours inspired by Skyline GT-Rs of yore. Millennium Jade and Midnight Purple are reminiscences of the beloved paint finishes of the R34 generation GT-R V-Spec II Nuìˆr and GT-R V-Spec, respectively. As before, the T-spec’s interior is wrapped in dark Mori Green, using semi-aniline and suede for the front buckets.

These exterior and interior colors were all available in the 2021 T-Spec, which was limited to just 100 units worldwide. Nissan has confirmed to us that the 2024 T-spec will also be a limited edition, but couldn’t say how many will be built at this point. Of course, all T-spec models will carry several badges that indicate their special equipment.

In keeping with Nissan’s philosophy of small but constant improvements, the addition of a front locking differential makes the big Kahuna GT-R Nismo even more capable. There are also new front and rear aprons based on the design of the GT-R Premium. But the Nismo goes further, adding a front lip, massive rear diffuser and canards. A new gooseneck rear wing offers 10% more area for downforce

These improvements should make the GT-R an even more formidable racetrack weapon, although the engine is a 2020 model, and thanks to turbochargers borrowed from the GT3 racer it puts out 600 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque.

Performance aside, the GT-R Nismo has always added lightweight components to improve performance. These include carbon fiber for roof, bonnet, trunk, front and rear aprons, side skirt covers and side mirrors. Improved unibody bonding also increases torsional rigidity, and the aforementioned carbon-ceramic brakes, wheels and tires also help differentiate the Nismo as the ultimate track carver.

The GT-R Nismo is again available in an exclusive Stealth Gray colorway. For 2024, connoisseurs can further differentiate their machines with a new Nismo Appearance Package. It adds exclusive red-accented versions of the Rays wheels, a clear-coated carbon fiber hood (as opposed to body-colored), and an exclusive engine cover.

The GT-R is due to hit showrooms this spring, with the NISMO to follow this summer. Nissan has confirmed this Working on a successor to the GT-R and examines different levels of electrification. Nissan is taking its time getting it right because it wants the GT-R to continue its mission as the giant killer, and the refresh means the current generation is likely to carry on for a few more years.
