2024 Polestar 2 spits out a few teeth and jumps to 300-mile range

It’s been a full four years since Polestar first unveiled the Tesla 3 Battle North Star 2 Limousine, his first mass-produced car. The sedan has been itching for an update, and Polestar has delivered more of practically everything buyers want – range, power, performance and standard equipment. Headlining upgrades include a switch to a sporty RWD layout on single-engine variants, an increased cap of up to 300 miles (483 km) of EPA-estimated range, and a 0 to 60 mph (96.5 kph) speed limit ), which falls off almost four seconds. The refreshed Polestar 2 also benefits from some much-needed dental work.

Polestar’s toothed grille has dragged its looks down since its birth first concept car. The company finally fixed the nagging bug with last year’s North Star 3 SUV concept that introduces what it calls SmartZone, a cleaner, body-colored front-end treatment that includes active safety hardware, including a forward-facing camera and mid-range radar.

2024 Polestar 2

The updated Polestar 2 is the first production car to carry SmartZone and we think the new design is much more appropriate for a premium electric car. Polestar still couldn’t help but show a row of angular teeth poking out from under the SmartZone panel, but sometimes progress is slow and incremental.

Polestar has gone well beyond a simple superficial facelift and have given the Polestar 2 some serious new capabilities and equipment for model year 2024 to ensure it’s the best Polestar 2 yet. Single-engine variants get a capacity boost from a larger 82kWh package, good for a preliminary EPA range estimate of 300 miles (483 km), up from 270 miles (435 km) for the original single-engine Polestar 2 Long Range.

This single engine also changes orientation, driving the rear wheels rather than the front wheels and delivering an additional 68 horses for a total of 299 hp (223 kW). The newly developed permanent magnet motor also brings a significant boost in torque, increasing from 243 to 361 lb-ft (329 to 489 Nm) of maximum torque.

The dual-motor AWD Polestar 2 gets its own rear alignment designed to improve performance and feel. The asynchronous front motor works with the rear primary motor for a total of 421 hp and 546 lb-ft (314 kW and 740 Nm). Polestar promises improved traction and a 0-60 mph (96.5 kph) speed that drops to 4.1 seconds with the help of the Performance Pack, or 4.3 seconds without it.

On less demanding, low-speed tracks, the front motor shuts off and lets the rear motor do the propulsion to improve efficiency. It turns back on immediately when the driver steps on the gas pedal. The dual motor model inherits the older 78kWh battery but still manages an improved range of up to 270 miles.

The Polestar 2 2024 also gets more standard features, including driver awareness technology and mobile phone charging. For North America, the twin-engine Long Range model also adds the standard Pilot package, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, blind spot information with steering assist, cross-traffic alert with brake assist, and rear collision alert mitigation.

Polestar didn’t release any North American pricing or availability information in Tuesday’s announcement, but it has already put the 2024 Polestar 2 up for order in Europe. It starts at €50,190 for the single-engine Standard Range model and €53,890 for the single-engine Long Range model (about US$54,700 and US$58,750 respectively).
