Subaru unveiled the new Impreza at the Los Angeles Auto Show a few months ago and is now trying to beef up the hatchback with a selection of STI bits. Unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the concept sports a Sunblaze Pearl paint job and looks a little more aggressive thanks to a subtle body kit. Mind you, this isn’t a full STI version, as Subaru Tecnica International has just started working on upgrades for the sixth-gen model.
The most obvious change was made at the back where the 2024 Impreza has twin center-mounted tailpipes that give it a slightly sportier look. This JDM spec car rides on STI branded black alloy wheels and has been fitted with a redesigned roof spoiler. At the rear, too, the bumper has received a pair of winglets to make the compact hatch look more muscular.
You’ll also notice the bolder gloss black side skirts to match the other STI add-ons, including the front spoiler lip and trim pieces above the fog lights. That was it for the time being only as Subaru says nothing about possible hardware changes. A sportier suspension setup is likely in the works, and ideally a little more oomph is planned.
For a refresher, the US-spec 2024 Impreza has a 2.0-liter base engine that makes 152 hp (113 kW) and 145 lb-ft (197 Nm), but you can upgrade to a 2.5-liter that makes 182 hp (136 hp upgrade kW) and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm). According to Subaru, the Japanese version will feature a 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain, with both featuring all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
For now, this is just a coy attempt by STI to inject some excitement into the latest Impreza. New parts are being developed and we’re hoping Subaru’s performance department plans some mechanical upgrades to go along with these visual improvements. with no STI version of the WRX in sighta hot hatch would fill that gap.
