2022 was far from a great Formula One season for Mercedes as the German team managed to win just one race, with George Russell triumphing on the penultimate lap in Brazil. He went on to secure fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship while Lewis Hamilton had to settle for sixth. Despite a less than ideal year, AMG has decided to mark the end of the F1 season with a special edition SL.
Based on the top-of-the-line 63, the sporty roadster is now available in the Motorsport® Collectors Edition with a range of visual enhancements to emulate the 2021 F1 machine instead of last year’s W13. Similar to the W12 driven by Hamilton and Bottas, the metallic paint finish has a gradient from silver to obsidian black, combined with the well-known Petronas Green for a contrasting effect. The rear half of the car has numerous three-pointed stars reminiscent of the racing car.
The Affalterbach-based company installs the AMG aerodynamics package with larger flics on the front and rear aprons as standard. The kit tailored to the SL also includes a beefier diffuser and underbody changes to improve airflow. Numerous black accents were added with the AMG Night Package and AMG Night Package II, including a black chrome grille, dark brake calipers and a black emblem.
The SL 63 Motorsport® Collectors rolls on 21-inch 10-twin-spoke wheels and has a black electrically operated fabric roof. The AMG performance seats are optionally available in black nappa leather with red or yellow stitching, both with an embossed AMG emblem in the headrests. Carbon fiber trim, a Burmester sound system, head-up display and AMG Track Pace telemetry system round out the goodies.
Mercedes only makes 100 roadsters and each comes with an indoor car cover made from a synthetic fabric that won’t tear. It also features an anti-static woven flannel inner liner to protect the vehicle from scratches and dust.
The SL 63 Motorsport® Collectors Edition is a no-cost show, so it uses the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 that produces 585 hp (430 kilowatts) and 800 Newton meters (590 lb-ft) of torque. That’s enough AMG muscle for 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 315 km/h.
