Why a bike rack?

Not all of us have a spacious car with which we can afford to fold down the seats and carry our bikes in the back.

In many cars, the trunk does not connect with the rear seats.

More than one manages and places it in the back, but they must be fastened with the belts that adapt to the people, but it is not so easy to put them on a bicycle.

This without counting the possible damage to the seats and that we are destined not to take the company.

If more than two people must go in the car, the solution sometimes is to place them inside the roof rack of the car, and they do not always fit correctly.

Resources such as tying them with ribbons, ropes, and other ingenious tricks that come out of the mind in order to go with the bike wherever it is, are not always safe and we can even risk a fine or lose the bike along the way (with everything that this entails).

Going out on the road and suddenly “something” or the same bicycle comes loose, can cause a serious accident.

Better to have the appropriate support that allows us to transport the bicycle in a safe, comfortable, and practical way; taking care of the bicycle, the car and protecting everyone from possible accidents. That’s why the best trunk mount bike rack for minivan is important for you.

Buyer Guide Before Selecting a Trunk Mount Bike Rack For Minivan

Buyer Guide Before Selecting a Trunk Mount Bike Rack For Minivan

There are different types of bicycle racks depending on where we place them in the car and the fastening system.

Trunk or tailgate bike carrier

They are the cheapest, but not the simplest to use because every time we do not use them we must disassemble them, opening the trunk with the bicycles in place is impossible.

With this system, the bicycles are glued to each other and against the car, with which they can scratch each other.

As a resource, you can use some protectors, but they do not cover the entire surface and you already have extra accessories.

They usually support up to 4 bicycles and carry a series of traffic restrictions with loaded bicycles, such as not exceeding the width of the car, they must not cover the license plate and the lights; in case they are covered, we must place license plates and auxiliary lights.

Hitch bike carrier

They are much more expensive but very comfortable.

The bike rack is anchored with a tow hook, which tilts to allow the boot to be opened even with the bikes on.

They are foldable and the only thing you have to disassemble when not in use.

The drawback is we must have the hitch ball approved in the vehicle.

They block rear visibility a bit because they go higher than bike racks that anchor to the rear door.

The restrictions are the same as with gate bike racks, but in these cases, we must when maneuvering, we must bear in mind that the car increases its length since the bike rack supposes a supplement at the rear.

Roof bike rack

Quite common to see and inexpensive, the disadvantage is that they require placing the bike in height with the effort that this entails.

They are not all equal to each other:

  • Some carry the bicycle with the wheels up, they are very uncomfortable to position the bike, it is also held by the handlebar of the bicycle and can damage it.
  • Another of the supports makes it necessary to remove the front wheel, to anchor the bike from the forks of it. It takes up little space and does not damage the bike, but we are obliged to assemble and disassemble the wheel and transport it in the trunk.
  • The most common of all is the one that allows the bike to stand upright, supported by one or two arms from the frame and tied by the rear wheel. It is more bulky and expensive than the previous ones, the fasteners can scratch the frame, but of the roof systems, it is the most practical and easy to use.

In general, they require the installation of bars on the roof.

They allow rear visibility and clear access to the trunk. They are recommended for high-end bikes since they get less dirty on the road.

Counting the car, the height must not exceed 4 m, the width must not exceed the rear-view mirrors and in length, it can protrude at most 15% more behind the car and must be obligatorily marked.

Whatever the system, we have to take into account that we are adding weight and volume to the car.

This will have an impact on the center of gravity, friction, aerodynamics, etc. We can notice differences when turning the car, in speed, fuel consumption, etc.

Our vehicle may already have an accessory incorporated, if we already have bars installed on the roof, the best thing is to choose a rooftop bike rack; If instead it comes equipped with a hitch ball, we can opt for a hitch bike rack.

Optimizing the resources we already have will help us save on the cost of the bicycle rack.

The frequency of use is no less important, taking into account that many of the bicycle racks must be dislodged.

If we are going to go out sporadically with bicycles, better a rooftop one; for more occasional uses we can resort to a rear door bike rack because they are the cheapest; But if we usually go out with the bike, it is better to have a hitch because they are installed and loaded easily and quickly.

Each bike rack has specifications regarding the size and number of bikes it can carry.

Regardless of how many bicycles we load, we must know the dimensions of each one of them.

Why a hitch mount bike rack?

The thing is, a hitch bike rack is that they exploit the weaknesses of other rack styles to provide you with a versatile and incredibly functional way to transport your bikes.

The biggest advantage they have, for example over roof-mounted models, is that they have a low installation height. This alone costs a million dollars for short people as they can load their bikes effortlessly. Second, unlike rack-mounted bike racks, hitch racks keep bicycles at some distance from the vehicle. This minimizes the chances of scratching the paint or finish.

Again, the hitch is much more stable than most rack-mounted struts. This style will also be your best choice if you plan on bringing some heavy downhill slopes or electric bikes with you. Moreover, most of them can be adapted for a variety of transport operations such as carrying skis, snowboards, or load carriers. So, a hitch mount bike rack is better option for you for choosing the best trunk mount bike rack for minivan.

How to choose the right hitch for your vehicle

Most vehicles equipped with a hitch receiver can fit a bike carrier onto the hitch. If your vehicle does not have a hitch receiver, it can usually be fitted. EZ Travel and Reese Towpower 81378 are some of our top recommendations. They are very affordable, durable, hold up to 2 bikes, and are easy to install.

Assuming your vehicle already has a hitch, you will need to determine if your ideal bike rack will fit.

For this review, we tested the Allen Bike Rack Premier rack, but Allen made several versions of the rack. However, all versions of the Allen rack are similar in functionality and differ only in functionality. The differences in these features are described at the end of the review.

Allen Hitch Bike Rack Review – Our Test Ride Results

Allen Sports is an established brand that creates high-quality products at a fraction of the price. We tested their bike trailers and now their car bike racks and were impressed with the quality and functionality of their products at an insanely low price.

Of course, with low prices for trailers or racks (or whatever for that matter), you are giving up the best features, functionality, and quality, but you still get a quality product to help you ride with your kids.

Allen Sports does an excellent job of providing really decent quality items for families on a budget. The Allen Sports Deluxe Hitch Rack is one of their family-friendly solutions. It holds up to 5 bikes for under $ 200!

Who is Allen Rack best for?
  • Families looking for a hitch system for use with standard, road, and hybrid adult bikes, as well as kids’ bikes from 20 inches.
  • People looking for a lightweight stand that can be easily picked up or removed from the car without assistance.
  • Families looking for a super affordable bike transport solution that can hold up to 5 bikes.
Who does it not suit
  • For those looking to quickly load their bikes onto the trunk and get to work
  • Cyclists with expensive bicycles who are worried about damaging the bike while loading/unloading or clanking after loading.
Why a Hanging Rack?

Hanging shelving is by nature a little more complex than tray shelving. It can definitely be tricky figuring out how to get all the bikes on a rack so the pedals don’t get stuck in the spokes and the handlebars don’t get stuck in the saddles.

But hanging shelving has its advantages as well. First, they are much more affordable. Secondly, they are much lighter. As a 5’2 ” woman, I can quickly put on and take off an Allen bike rack and do it myself. I cannot do this with a tray rack, not even with the 63 lb Saris SuperClamp EX “light”.

As a busy mom, I use the trunk of my minivan A LOT – groceries, soccer equipment, balance bikes, sports bags, an extra child from time to time – and I need easy, quick access to it. (Just kidding about an extra child; we are big advocates of proper use of seat belts and car seats!) So while loading and unloading bicycles are significantly more difficult than a tray rack, I prefer the convenience of being able to easily remove and insert the rack.

In addition, since all garage space is currently occupied by bicycles, tools, soccer gear, strollers, and bicycle trailers, this rack does not create visual clutter in the garage and does not take up much space. This rack literally only takes a few inches on the floor. Score!

How it works in a nutshell

For this review, we used the Allen Sports Deluxe Locking Hitch Rack – 4, although all of their suspension rack models are very similar. Installing and removing the Allen bike rack on your vehicle is incredibly easy and very fast. I can put the trunk on and off the car in less than a minute.

All Allen Hitch Posts are compatible with vehicles with a 2 ” Hitch Receiver. Bike racks for 2 and 3 bikes are also compatible with a 1.25 “receiver (they come with an adapter to make it compatible with a 2” receiver as well). The rack arms go through the bicycle frame and the bicycle top tube rests on the rack arms. Three sliding buckles (such as backpack straps) and carrycots secure the bikes to the rack.

Capacity and bike fit

Allen bike racks are different in that they can fit on your bike. Just check out some consumer reviews on Amazon – people have surely come up with some crazy ways to get their bikes from point A to point B using this rack.

The downside is that your bike is also likely to undergo a lot of wear and tear if you use this rack regularly. I spent at least three hours (mind you, under the hot and humid Texas summer sun) removing and inserting bikes of all shapes and sizes from this rack, trying to figure out how best to configure them and what will work and what will not. … Here are my key takeaways:

1 – If you want to carry 4 bikes, buy a 5- bike carrier for 5. If you want to carry 3 bikes, buy a 4-bike carrier and so on and so forth. I tested the 4 bike mount and every time I loaded it I changed the configuration or used different bikes. And every time this fourth bike was quite difficult to take in the cradles. However, 3 bikes have always been pretty simple and doable. The rack price only increases by $ 10-30 (depending on the model you buy) as capacity increases. So depending on your budget, if you can increase the size, I highly recommend it.

2 – If you’re super-protecting your bike and want to keep it pristine, it’s better to opt for a tray rack (albeit a lot more expensive). -Look instead for a tray rack like RockyMounts SplitRail. Putting your bikes on this hanging rack takes a lot of cramming, jamming, and puzzling. Especially if you are using the rack to the max. The handlebars will squeeze into the seats, the pedals will be in the spokes, etc. The bike will often come into contact with the bike and the bike closest to the rack will be in contact with the mast while driving.

3 – The best way to load this rack depends on the shape and size of the bikes you are carrying. The manual states that bicycles must be reversed when loading the rack. Sometimes this worked best with the bikes we tested, other times it was not. So if your bikes don’t fit on one side, unload them and try bikes elsewhere or in the other direction.

4 – Once you’ve got the bikes together on the rack, take a picture! This will help you remember how to download it next time. Especially if you are not going to tow the same bikes all the time.

Distance between bikes

The distance from the center of one carrycot to the center of the next carrycot is 6.5 inches. For a hanging rack, that’s a really decent amount of space. This is the same distance you’ll find on some of the more expensive racks such as the Saris Bones EX-3.

However, compared to a tray rack, the small space between each leg is the reason for this blockage on the bike arms. Loosening the earbuds on the handlebars and turning them in line with the rest of the bikes will reduce contact between the bikes. This will help reduce wear and tear but will increase the already lengthy loading process for your bikes.

Wheel size

This rack is suitable for bicycles 20 “and larger. Some 20 “bikes need an adapter, other 20” bikes we could load without an adapter. Bicycles smaller than 20 inches do not have long enough frames for the carrying handles to fit inside.

Larger bikes are much easier to carry on this rack because they have a larger frame that allows them to be moved right and left over the arms of the rack. This gives you more wiggle room where they sit, so it’s easier to load sequential bikes with more handlebar and pedal space.

Frame shape and use of the transition bar

Allen Sports sells adapter bars that attach to the bike headset and Seatpost to make loading small bikes and steeply sloped bikes a bit easier. Most of the bikes we loaded onto the rack could technically be loaded without an adapter, but the adapter was useful in several different scenarios.

These adapters are also useful for changing settings when loading bikes on the bike rack. For example, when I loaded a 20-inch bike that technically didn’t need an adapter, the bike didn’t fit because the rim and tire of the first bike interfered with the 20-inch handgrip and handbrake. bicycle. I fitted the adapter to a 20 ” bike and it lowered the handlebars so that I could put the bike on my hands in the correct position.

The steeply sloping top tubes and about 20-inch bikes use an adapter to facilitate loading. However, thru frames and steep, steeply sloping top tubes can also be installed by rotating the leg and placing the strut arm behind the rear seat tube and under the rear leg.

With my step-by-step framework, I really prefer this method over using an adapter. It’s just as fast and my bike stays flush with the rack, as opposed to the front tire being much higher than the rear. Again, the angle of your bike on a rack depends on the shape of your frame.

Bicycle quantity and weight

Allen bike racks are designed for 2 to 5 bikes with a maximum weight of 35 pounds per bike. As mentioned earlier, if you can afford a small upgrade, buy a rack with one extra bike capacity that you need. So if you need to carry four bikes, buy a rack for 5 bikes.

Hanging racks in general, and especially these Allen bike racks, are much lighter than tray racks. Weighing only 26 pounds, you don’t need to have a lot of upper body strength to attach or remove the post from the hitch.

Loading and unloading bicycles

The correct way to load bikes is to load them onto the rack arms and place the top tubes on the supports with the bikes in alternating directions (if they can fit correctly) starting with the largest / heaviest bike. Then secure the bikes to the carrycots with the straps. Finally, attach the wheels and lower bike brackets together and to the mast with a 70 ” strap (strap is not included, but instructions tell you to use it).

I have been using this rack regularly for a couple of months and have never strapped my bikes together or to a mast. Bicycles wobble when you brake and accelerate, and they will hit the mast if not secured when you brake or accelerate quickly. Using a strap to tie them all together will greatly reduce the amount of motion and rocking of the bikes while riding, reducing wear and tear.

I would hesitate to use this stand on long journeys or in heavy traffic with stops if they were not well secured. However, since I only take our bikes for short distances, I just aim to ride a little less aggressively when the trunk is fully loaded – my kids tend to get less sick when I ride with the rack installed, so that’s a bonus!

The manufacturer also recommends placing spacers between bikes (towels, pool noodles, cardboard, etc.) to protect them from damage. But all of this, in addition to the fact that all bikes are strapped, adds a lot of time to load and unload the bikes, and I’d rather get to wherever I go faster. If I was cycling long distances, I would definitely go for all the extra problems.

The “sweat factor” of loading this rack is 7 out of 10. Compare this to loading the tray rack, which has a sweat rate of about 2 out of 10. It takes some muscle and some maneuvering to load the bikes into your arms and get them in the cradles and securely fastened. This is a task for adolescents or adults, someone younger probably will not cope.

However, this is a trade-off for the sweat factor on installation; The Allen Bike Rack has a sweat rate of 1 in 10, as opposed to a tray rack installation, which has a sweat rate of 8 out of 10. You win, you lose.

Folding down and access to the rear hatch

All Allen bike racks have levers that fold down when not in use and masts that tilt away from the hatch. Their tilt and folding depends on the model you are buying.

Some models have pull levers and release buttons. They are significantly faster to use than quick-release pin models. However, I have a model that uses QR contacts and this is by no means a disgusting task.

To access the sunroof, you will remove the QR clip and tilt the pillar away from the vehicle to access the sunroof. The mast tilts back about 45 °. Access to the hatch is not possible when the bicycles are loaded onto the rack. Tilting the hitch when loaded with bicycles can weaken the structural integrity of the rack as well as damage bicycles.

So don’t forget to pack your rack before loading your bikes. Otherwise, you’ll have to sit in the backseat of the car to access the trunk … and no parent wants to admit the mess in the backseat of the car.

The bike carriers 2 & 3 works with a 1.25 “receiver (but these models also come with a 2″ hitch adapter). The 4 & 5 bike mounts only work with 2 ” receivers. None of the struts are intended for use on trailers, at the front of a vehicle, or on RVs.

Weighing only 26.6 lbs. (for Deluxe Locking 4 Bike Carrier) The rack attaches easily to the hitch receiver in less than a minute. Simply press down on the hitch spring pin and slide the hitch into the receiver.

Allen offers locks with and without locking for the Premier and Deluxe models. Latch models are equipped with a “lock handle”. This handle has two functions. First, it has a keyhole that locks the hitch into the receiver and prevents theft. Second, by turning this knob, it tightens the clutch to the receiver to eliminate any hesitation.

Non-locking models use an “anti-swing bolt” which must be tightened with a wrench. This can slow down the installation a little, especially if you need to look for a suitably sized wrench. If you can, I highly recommend spending the extra $ 20 to buy the locked version. Not only is your shelving less likely to be stolen from the car, but it is also significantly more convenient.

Allen bike racks come in a variety of sizes to accommodate 2 to 5 bikes (obviously all of these racks will also only fit 1 bike). They have two main categories of models – Deluxe and Premier, with subcategories of both for each media size. Each category offers different features and conveniences, but in general, the functionality of all models is the same.

The main differences between the Premier and Deluxe ranges are as follows:

  • Spine Shield: Premier models offer the Spine Shield, which is a soft shield that protects the bike from the metal rack mast. The Deluxe models do not have a soft screen.
  • Rapid Tilt-away Mast: Premier models have a one-handed pull arm to tilt the mast away from the trunk, while the Deluxe models use a quick-release clamp.
  • Quick-fold carry handles: Premier models have two red buttons that you press to fold your arms, while Deluxe models use a quick release clip.
  • Quick Secure straps: Premier models have redesigned rubber straps that attach to the handle to secure the bike in the carrycot. Deluxe models have fabric straps that need to be tucked in and then tightened.

The initial rack assembly is very easy and shouldn’t take more than ten minutes, especially if you’ve watched this video from Allen Sports:

After the initial assembly, there is no reason to disassemble the stand as it takes up very little space when fully assembled.

Allen Bike Rack Bottom Line

Allen Sport Bike Racks are much easier to mount to your vehicle than traditional tray racks. They are lighter, less cumbersome, and do not pose the problem of storage space like tray racks. The trade-off to this simplicity, however, is that rack-loading bikes are more difficult and time-consuming, and your bikes will suffer premature wear if you load them at maximum power. For the price, however, this sturdy Allen bike rack is simply unbeatable! So considering overall it can be put under the best trunk mount bike rack for minivan.

  • Takes up much little storage space when not in use
  • Great quality at a very affordable price

  • The bicycles are close to each other; high damage potential

Looking for a sophisticated but easy way to transport your bicycles? The Swagman XC2 2 bike rack can be the perfect rack for you. The hitch-mounted bike carrier is intuitively designed to be adjusted to suit different bike frame sizes and types.

While it may seem to some that the capacity of this two-bike rack is somewhat limited, it is one of the most reliable coupler bike racks you can buy. Each bike is securely attached to the frame and to both wheels, virtually eliminating the possibility of theft. You can also improve the safety of your bike with an optional cable lock and hitch pin.

Below we will take a closer look at the features of the rack.

The XC2 cross-country bike carrier offers the same versatility and style that Swagman stands are known for. Both children’s and adult bicycles are easily transported in it.

The XC2 has two vertical ratchet arms that hold the bikes in place and can be easily adjusted to fit the bike frame. This rack will fit bike frames up to 59 cm in length. The armrests have a soft coating to protect the bike frames from scratches. The entire rack is powder-coated to protect the metal from corrosion.

Assembling the rack and setting up the bikes takes a little effort, but it’s not overly difficult. Once the bikes are securely mounted on the rack, you can transport them with minimal rocking.

The XC2 is built for cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans. It is not compatible with RVs, RVs, and trailers.

Features and customization

The Swagman XC2 2 Bike Carrier is a cross-country ski rack designed specifically for mountain bikes. It comes with all the features that ensure a worry-free transport of your bike during your cross-country adventure.

The XC2 is suitable for 1-1 / 4 by 1 “and 2” by 2 “couplers. It has a 4-inch rack lift, which provides ample ground clearance and prevents bicycles from touching the road unnecessarily. It is suitable for tires with a maximum width of 3.5 inches, but you can buy separate tire trays for larger tires if you have a large bike. The XC2 accepts a maximum weight of 70 pounds, which is 35 pounds for each bike.

Installing the rack is straightforward, but takes a couple of minutes. First, you need to install the gripping levers on the ratchet mast; just slide them down and they lock securely in place. Pushbuttons on the levers release the bikes. To free the bikes for removal, slide the grapple levers up the ratchet mast while pressing the buttons.

Once the handles are securely attached to the ratchet system, place the rack in the receiver hitch with the appropriate adapter for your receiver – either a 1-1 / 4 by 1- or 2-by-2-inch receiver.

Next, tighten the anti-rolling bolt through. As the name clearly indicates, this bolt prevents wobbling between the strut and the hitch as you hit the road. The bolt must be firmly tightened before replacing the clamp. Your rig should now be in the stowed position, which creates space when the rack is not in use.

The rack is now ready to load your bikes. The handlebars must be at a good enough height, so raise the mast before loading the bikes. After the levers are ready, remove the wheel supports and loosen them to accommodate the bike wheels.

You can now place your bike on a rack; place the wheels in the appropriate wheel supports and tighten them. Then hook the handle onto the horizontal bike frame. You are now ready to travel.

Depending on the frame design, some bikes may be more difficult to install, but in most cases, this should work perfectly with a little tinkering. So considering overall it can be put under the best trunk mount bike rack for minivan.

The Swagman Traveler XC2 comes next on our list of the best bike rack reviews. It’s hard to beat this device if you’re looking for a device that’s easy to set up and that makes it easy to turn bikes on and off with little effort.

Easy installation

The Swagman XC2 is very easy to assemble as it requires several pins to be inserted into your hands. This bike rack fits a 2 ” Class III hitch receiver. It also comes with a 2 ” bumper mount adapter for 4.5 ” continuous steel bumper for RV. This is so convenient for RVs that don’t have a built-in hitch receiver.

Swagman Traveler is as solid as it looks. It is made from a durable metal gauge that will hold up to 2 bikes weighing 35 pounds each for several years. Its metal arms are also powder-painted black to prevent rusting.

This is a platform-type bicycle rack. It uses 2 wheel trays to support your bike. If you are tired of lifting your bikes to the roof of a tall car, you will probably enjoy the low headroom with this rack the most. You can load your 2 bikes in less than 60 seconds.

The wheel stands on this model are wide enough to accommodate wheels from 20 to 29 inches. Again, each of these wheels rests independently adjusts along the arm by turning a knob. This makes it easy to carry anything from an adult bike with a wider wheelbase to a bike for kids. If you’re wondering, these carrycots cannot fall off your hand if you don’t want to. There are small bolts on each side of the two arms that hold them in the frame.

It is worth mentioning that each wheel pool set is located on one side of the mainmast. This helps to minimize bike-to-bike contact.

In addition to the wheel reservoirs, the Swagman Traveler XC2 bike rack also has 2 hooks that hold the bikes securely against the mounts. These hooks fit all types of bike frames – wide or narrow. They have durable and heavy padding that won’t scratch your bike’s paint. These hooks move up and down the mast when the lever is pressed. This mechanism allows them to slide down and keep your kids’ bikes in place in the wheel pools.

Be aware that the role of these hooks is to clamp down on bicycles. They are strong enough to keep their grip on even the roughest roads. However, this does not mean that your bikes cannot be stolen if they are out of sight. Unfortunately, the Swagman Traveler XC2 does not have a safety cable. So you will have to order it separately when you buy a bike hitch mount.

Access to the cargo hold

To get your sports equipment and other items from the trunk, you first need to remove the bicycles from the trunk. You will also have to lower the mainmast to the right or left by pulling out the pin. This can be a little awkward. However, this isn’t such a big deal considering you can load two bikes in less than a minute.

In the same way, the carrycots can be folded for storage. You can also ride with the stand in the folded position without any problem. This ease of folding also simplifies storage as the rack does not take up much space. So considering overall it can be put under the best trunk mount bike rack for minivan.

10. Thule EasyFold XT 2 Hitch Bike Rack, Black

Thule EasyFold XT 2 Hitch Bike Rack, Black
Thule EasyFold XT 2 Hitch Bike Rack, Black

Sophisticated yet functional ramp rack for loading heavy e-bikes.

Our verdict

Thule EasyFold XT is an interesting bike rack with some very unique features designed to solve the problems of loading heavy e-bikes. This hitch-mount platform rack has a declared load capacity of 65 lbs per bike and features a fold-down ramp that allows users to roll bikes into place.

It’s also relatively light, has a clever foldable design, and folds down quite compactly for storage or disuse. While some aspects of its design are quite user-friendly, the loading process is somewhat complicated and the bike frame attachment system does not seem very secure.

In addition, given the large amount of plastic and moving parts in its design, we have some durability concerns, especially given the high asking price.

Our analysis and test results

There is no doubt that the popularity of electric bicycles is growing rapidly. Thule solves all the hassle of transporting these heavy e-bikes with the EasyFold XT 2.

Thanks to its high capacity and foldable ramp, users can roll their bikes on the platform rather than trying to lift them. This rack also has an interesting foldable design, and it folds into a nice little package for storage or when not in use.

Unfortunately, we found many other aspects of this rack to feel awkward and unwieldy, and the bike’s mounting system didn’t inspire much confidence.

While this is a viable option for users who may find it difficult to load their heavy e-bikes, we believe there are better and less expensive options for everyone else.

Performance comparison

Ease of everyday use

EasyFold XT 2 is a blended package in terms of ease of use. Some elements, such as the ramp and tilt mechanism, are quite user-friendly, while other functions are a little more difficult to work with.

While it does make loading and unloading heavy bikes easier, the attachment system takes some getting used to and doesn’t feel as secure as we would like.

Removing and attaching the Easy Fold XT 2 to the vehicle is easier than with most hitch stands. Weight 45 lbs, small folded size, and built-in wheels make it easy to move from storage to vehicle.

The hitch pin also requires no tools, making it easier to attach the hitch to the receiver than most others. Once the stand is on the vehicle, start by swinging the stand so that the platform is level.

If your bikes are lightweight, simply lift them up and place them on a rack, starting with the inner pallet. There are two clamps that clamp the bike frames: the shorter one is for the inner bike, and the longer one holds the outer bike.

These clamps can be rotated or moved to different positions to accommodate different frame designs. Open the frame clamp rubberized jaws by loosening the handle, align with the frame, and tighten.

There is a mechanism that clicks when you have achieved the correct tension. This is a nice touch as you cannot squeeze the bike frame until it breaks.

The wheel straps are fixed in position and are used to wrap around the rim and secure it with a ratchet to relieve tension at a 45-degree angle to the middle of the rack.

Load the second bike onto the outer tray and repeat the steps to secure it using the longer clamping arm. Often the outer clamping arm requires some adjustment and fiddling to work around the other bike’s frame.

If your bikes are heavy, you can use the ramp function. The ramp is stored under the main platform and can be accessed by pressing the tilt lever in the middle of the post and tilting the platform outward and away from the vehicle. The foldable ramp is stored in its smallest folded form and must be folded out for use.

A small ledge at one end of the ramp fits into a horizontal slot at the end of the post. Once in place, simply roll the bike onto the pallet and attach the bikes as described above. Once you’re done with the ramp, you’ll need to fold it down again and tilt the bike rack so you can put it back in storage.

This process is a little more complicated than on other platform racks, and using a ramp adds several steps and some time to the process. Regardless, the ramp can be indispensable for people who would otherwise find it difficult to load their heavy e-bikes.

We also have some concerns about the safety of the frame clamps. Due to the fact that they have an open mouth and do not completely wrap around the frame, we feel that they can inadvertently release the bike frame on a bumpy road if they are not attached neatly or in an imperfect place.

In fact, we’ve read several user reviews where bikes were damaged when the frame clamps were loosened during transit. In addition, it is not possible to attach a bike to this rack without making contact with the frame, it could damage the fancy carbon frames or paint it if you don’t purchase the $ 19.95 Thule Carbon Frame Protector.

Another factor to consider is if you load different bikes frequently, the clamping arms will need to be rearranged to work with other frame designs, which adds some time to the process.

On the plus side, the tilt mechanism is smooth and has a good range of motion to allow access to the trunk. Activate leg bend and slowly lower the stance to the side. This can be a little awkward if you have two e-bikes loaded onto a rack as you support a fair amount of weight while lowering the rack. The locking system is easy to use and functional.

Easy to remove and store

The EasyFold XT 2 is lightweight and foldable, making it one of the easiest ways to remove and store your platform hitch. Not only does it fold into a nice little package measuring 31 x 12 x 26 inches, but it also weighs just 45 pounds. The handles at the top of the rack make it easy to lift, and the two small wheels at the bottom of the rack allow you to roll it to or from storage. Unfortunately, one of the wheels at the bottom of the strut broke almost immediately, rendering this feature useless.

The tool-free locking pin makes installing and removing the rack from the receiver quick and easy. To remove this post, simply unlock the main tightening knob and loosen it by turning it counterclockwise. Pull the easy-pin hook out of the receiver and remove the stand. The hitch pin retainer is also built into the handle on the hitch pin, making it quick and easy to attach the strut to your vehicle. So considering overall it can be put under the best trunk mount bike rack for minivan.
