BMW extends contract with Solid Power


As part of an expanded joint development agreement, the BMW Group and Solid Power have added a research and development license as the basis for their next steps together.

This allows BMW to set up an ASSB prototype line in its CMCC (Cell Manufacturing Competence Center) in Parsdorf near Munich.

The expanded relationship provides significant benefits for both companies, including conducting complementary cell development and manufacturing activities in both companies to further advance overall solid state cell design and manufacturing expertise.

“BMW remains committed to the pursuit of solid-state batteries, a technology that we believe has significant potential for the future,” said Frank Weber, BMW’s chief engineer. “We look forward to working even more closely with Solid Power and adding the ability to manufacture solid state cells based on their designs in our own pilot plant. We expect this agreement will accelerate the installation of our solid-state prototype line and our companies’ shared goal to commercialize this promising cell technology.”

Before installing the prototype line, BMW employees will work with Solid Power to optimize the cell manufacturing processes.

“The expansion of our relationship with BMW is further evidence that both companies believe in Solid Power’s technological advancement and the value of solid state batteries,” said David Jansen, interim CEO, President and Chairman of Solid Power.

Solid Power plans to deliver full-size vehicle cells to BMW for testing in 2023.

A first demonstrator vehicle with ASSB technology is planned before 2025.
