Refreshed BMW X5 on camera with new dual screen dashboard

Having spied the refreshed BMW X5 on several occasions, we know the planned exterior changes won’t be all that significant. The interior, however, will get the company’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment system with a dual-screen layout. Now we have new evidence that the big SUV is indeed getting in-cab hardware and software upgrades to match what most of BMW’s other models currently offer.

On X5 Prototype was recently caught on camera in California and new video of the KindelAuto Channel on YouTube shows us a gray X5 hybrid with very little camouflage. Camo foil hides the front fascia, where we’re expecting redesigned headlights and likely new kidney grilles. At the rear, the taillights are hidden and we expect new internal graphics as well as some other small changes to the rear fascia design.

However, the most important changes are in the cabin. As you can see in the video at the top of this page, the automaker is already testing the new X5 with a dual-screen layout for the dashboard. This is a design BMW has been using for around two years and it’s the standard option on most of the brand’s models. The move to new iDrive 8 technology is probably the biggest upgrade to come for the SUV in the mid-life refresh. As a side note, BMW has introduced the new iDrive 9 only recently and plans to release it in its final form very soon.

It’s also worth noting that this is a hybrid prototype, which is confirmed by the hybrid test vehicle stickers on the back. BMW is working on a revised electrified powertrain that will replace the X5 xDrive45e in the lineup. Based on information currently available, this new hybrid will combine BMW’s supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric motor for peak power of 389 hp (290 kilowatts) and 443 pound-feet (600 Newton-meters) of torque.

There is no official information about the debut date of the updated X5. Some sources say this could happen next month, but we can’t confirm that at the moment. Nonetheless, we expect it to go on sale in the US later this year as a 2024 model.
