  • China, which has been off the schedule since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will not be replaced in the 2023 schedule.
  • This means there will be a four-week gap in the early stages of the F1 season between the races in Australia on April 2nd and Azerbaijan on April 30th.
  • Despite China’s absence, the 2023 season will still feature a record-breaking 23 grands prix.

This means there will be a four week gap in the early stages of the season between the races in Australia on April 2nd and Azerbaijan on April 30th.

Formula 1’s 2023 schedule has finally been ratified after championship organizers confirmed China’s canceled event would not be replaced.

China, which has been off schedule since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was tentatively added on April 16 as the fourth event of the 2023 season. Formula 1 then canceled the event in December, citing the ongoing difficulties related to the pandemic.

China then revoked its strict Covid-Zero policy, which reopened its borders in early January, and authorities gave organizer Juss Event the green light to push to add China to the schedule. But Formula 1 confirmed on Tuesday that China’s run will not be replaced and that there is no way it will be included later in the 2023 season.

This means that in the early stages of the season there will be a four-week gap between the races in Australia on April 2nd and Azerbaijan on April 30th, which are rounds three and four respectively. A request from Azerbaijan to bring its date forward by a week to April 23 was rejected by the local organizer.

It is understood that Formula 1 also considered the possibility of including a race in Portimao, Portugal on China’s April 16 deadline, but ultimately decided against it.

China was a fixture on the calendar between 2004 and 2019 while Formula 1 agreed a three-year extension with the country during the pandemic. Despite China’s absence, the 2023 season will still feature a record-breaking 23 grands prix.

The season begins on March 5 in Bahrain, with the only pre-season test taking place in the country on February 23-25. Formula 1 is visiting the United States for three events: Miami on May 7th, Austin on October 22nd. and Las Vegas on November 18th.

The season ends with the round in Abu Dhabi on November 26th.

Las Vegas is the only new event on the 2023 schedule, while Qatar return after making their debut in 2021 to complete a 10-year deal.

France is the only event in 2022 to be left off the schedule.
