A group of white hat hackers cracked customer and backend operations of several car manufacturersincluding BMW, Ferrari, Ford, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Rolls-Royce.

The findings follow the group’s discovery late last year of bugs in SiriusXM’s telematics service that led to security breaches on Honda, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota models.

The white-hat hackers gained access to this latest round of security vulnerabilities, including detailed customer information and internal management functions that the group only disclosed earlier this month due to a self-imposed 90-day moratorium. Sam Curry, an Omaha, Neb., safety engineer, narrates Automotive News.

The moratorium, inspired by the guidelines of Google’s Project Zero security research team, is intended to express intent for disclosure but also give time to work with vendors to close the vulnerabilities, Curry said. The researchers also hacked service providers Spireon and Reviver, Curry said.

Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Reviver and Spireon told Automotive News that they have closed the gaps.

Ford said it fixed the problem after learning about the problem through its “bug bounty” program.

Porsche Cars North America spokesman Marcus Kabel said the company is constantly monitoring its systems. “We take all reports of vulnerabilities very seriously,” he said. “Our primary goal is to prevent unauthorized access by third parties to the systems in our vehicles.”
