Mazda rotary engine is coming back on an MX-30 plug-in hybrid

  • Mazda’s European branch announced this morning that the Wankel engine is making a return to the 2023 MX-30 R-EV, is scheduled to be unveiled on Friday 13th January.
  • The company also unveiled a new logo featuring a lowercase “e” in a triangle that mimics the shape of a Wankel engine.
  • The new powertrain should bring additional utility to the MX-30, previously sold as an electric vehicle in the US, with a disappointing 100-mile EPA-estimated range.

Despite a sleek exterior and Mazda’s trademark athletic handling, the company’s first EV, the 2022 MX-30, fell short of the key attributes of a successful EV. The $34,000 crossover returned just 100 miles of EPA range and an even meager 70 miles on our freeway range test, and stomped to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds. But the MX-30 will soon be rejuvenated and become a plug-in hybrid as the rotary engine returns to Mazda’s lineup for the first time since 2012.

Details are still scarce, but Mazda in Europe announced this morning that the updated crossover, to be called the MX-30 R-EV, will be fully unveiled on January 13. The automaker also showed off a new logo, which is believed to adorn the plug-in hybrid with a lowercase “e” in a triangle depicting the shape of a Wankel engine.

Are you coming to the US?

While the MX-30 was sold exclusively as an electric vehicle in the US, a mild hybrid version featuring Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter inline-four was offered in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Mazda’s US division has yet to mention the MX-30 R-EV, but we expect the 2023 model year plug-in hybrid version to arrive in the United States and sales will likely extend beyond California, where the all-electric MX-30 had been limited. More details on US availability should come in after the rotary engine crossover was unveiled this Friday.
