Now that the BMW M3 Touring is finally here, it actually only has one car left to contend with – the Audi RS4 Avant. Prior to the release of the M3 Touring, the RS4 Avant was the fast car of choice for enthusiasts, particularly those living in snowy winter climates. When car enthusiasts think of fast station wagons, the first thing that springs to mind is the RS4 Avant. Now that the M3 Touring is here, is it good enough to beat Audi’s beloved Avant? After piston headsthe M3 Touring is not only better, it makes the Audi feel like it’s 20 years old.
It makes sense that the BMW M3 Touring would make the RS4 Avant look old as it’s quite a bit newer than the RS4. This M3 generation is a few years newer than the RS4, has more power (in Competition/Touring versions) and has more advanced cabin technology. In comparison, the RS4 will obviously feel its age.
What is important, however, is that driving feels better PH. The BMW M3 Competition xDrive is a sensational sports sedan with razor-sharp steering, an unshakeable front end, explosive power and enduring grip. Of course, despite the few extra pounds, the station wagon version feels similar thanks to the longer roof and larger trunk. The M3 Competition xDrive is already heavy, so the slight increase in curb weight makes little difference.
After piston heads, the only real competitor the BMW M3 Touring has to worry about is its own cousin, the ALPINA B3 Touring. The B3 Touring is not only just as fast as the M3 Touring in the real world, thanks to its extra torque, but it’s also more comfortable and luxurious inside. While the traditional M customer is not looking for that, station wagon customers typically want more suitability for everyday use and comfort. However, there is certainly a place in the market for both cars as one is sportier and one more comfortable and it’s nice that customers finally have a choice.
