The tried and tested steering wheel returns to the Tesla Model S and Model X mandatory since the restyling of the cars 2021 will continue to be offered, anyone who orders a new S or X can ride a normal bike again at no extra charge.
Unlike before, the new steering wheel in Model S and Model X doesn’t have levers that control turn signals, windshield wipers, or gear selection. Instead, all of these functions are now performed via capacitive buttons and controller balls, just like those on the yoke.
What about all those people who bought a Tesla Model S or X with the yoke style setup and are unhappy with it? Well, Tesla lets those customers trade it in for a real wheel with an aftermarket option through its online store. It won’t be available until March and will cost $700, which is said to include installation by Tesla Service.
The return of a regular steering wheel to the Model S and Model X represents a symbolic about-face from Tesla — and CEO Elon Musk in particular. Back in 2021, in the months after the company sparked controversy by only offering both models with a yoke, Musk tweeted that it did no chance a traditional steering wheel would return, also optional. The irony is that eggs have a yoke and Musk might have a little bit of that on his face.
While Tesla’s yoke-style tiller has its fair share of critics (including us), it’s still better than a steering wheel flies into your hand while driving.
