The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray can turn off its front axle motor for better burnouts

The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray is finally here, namely the words “Hybrid all-wheel-drive” might not get your heart racing, we have a feeling the E-Ray’s 655bhp and 2.5-second zero-to-60 time probably will. It’s certainly not as track-oriented as the Corvette Z06, but that’s the point. It’s a super powerful Corvette for people who aren’t likely to take their car to the racetrack. But what about the burnouts? Surely Chevy knows people want to burn out, right?

The good news is that the four-wheel-drive E-Ray can definitely still burn out. Chevy knows burnouts are good and fun (when done in a safe and responsible manner, of course). It wouldn’t build a Corvette that couldn’t do that. When engine trend reportsthe Corvette E-Ray offers drivers the ability to turn off the front axle motor and turn the car into a rear-wheel drive burnout machine.

To do this, you must first disable the stability and traction control. Then, pull and hold both paddle shifters, step on the brake with your left foot, step on the accelerator, and release the paddle shifters. The car then roasts the rear tires in a glorious cloud of tire smoke. It can take some time to get right though, because if you hit the brakes too hard, the transmission controls will step in to salvage the drivetrain. But if you don’t brake hard enough, the car just drives off.

Unfortunately for burnout loving E-Ray owners, engine trend reports that it is not possible to keep the car in place during a burnout. It has to go slowly, otherwise the engine would overwhelm the front tires. Apparently, with the weight of the engine overhead, the rear tires have so much grip that they can move the car forward even when the front brakes have completely locked the wheels.

So it’s not the ideal solution, and it certainly isn’t line-lock, but we won’t complain about less-than-perfect burnouts in a 655hp supercar. That would be just rude.
