Volvo had announced rear-wheel drive versions, more range and faster charging for electric C40 and XC40 models.
The range is 41 miles (66 km) for some variants.
Three new powertrains are offered for the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge. These include two rear-wheel drive variants and a revised all-wheel drive performance model.
The second generation permanent magnet electric motor driving the rear axles was developed in-house.
The standard range single motor RWD is powered by a 175 kW permanent magnet electric motor that offers a 3% power increase over the outgoing 170 kW front wheel drive single motor variant.
The same battery capacity of 69 kWh is carried over, but improvements in cooling efficiency mean it can now offer longer range, with a range of up to 461 km (286 miles) according to the WLTP test cycle, compared to 264 miles (425 km) previously (WLTP).
Meanwhile, the range of the single-engine C40 Recharge improves from 438 km (WLTP) to 476 km (296 miles). A 10-80% charge takes about 34 minutes with a 130kW DC public charger.
A larger battery coupled with a more powerful 185 kW RWD permanent magnet electric motor is also offered. This second new variant is equipped with an 82kWh battery that increases the range of the XC40 Recharge single engine range extended to up to 515km and with the C40 Recharge single engine range extended up to 533km (WLTP).
Charging performance has improved as the larger battery pack allows charging at an updated peak power of 200kW DC (previously 150kW DC), while a 10-80 per cent charge takes around 28 minutes.
The all-wheel drive variants also benefit from these updates and achieve even more impressive improvements in range. The previous arrangement of two 150 kW electric motors on the front and rear axles has been replaced by the in-house developed 183 kW permanent magnet electric motor on the rear axle and a new 117 kW asynchronous electric motor on the front axle.
This new configuration, coupled with an 82kWh battery pack and improvements in overall battery cooling efficiency, means the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD can now travel up to 500km (311 miles) on a single charge, an increase of 62km (39 miles) over the previous repeat. The range of the C40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD has improved from 451 km (WLTP) to 315 miles (507 km).
Exterior updates also help improve efficiency where possible. A new 19-inch alloy wheel helps reduce drag with its aerodynamic design.
Separately, 60 and 90 Series plug-in hybrid models will receive a new two-phase on-board charger, allowing these models to charge faster. The new charger almost doubles the maximum charging capacity of these cars to 6.4 kW.
