In recent years, Volkswagen has unveiled several series electric concept vehicles, all falling under the ID family – the first to hit American shores was the ID.4 crossover. But the most anticipated future electric vehicle – and perhaps the most desirable – is the promised ID Buzz. Available in Europe, this homage to the original T1 minibus hasn’t arrived in America yet. Now it has already been announced that a powerful ID Buzz GTX is being worked on.
Autocar reports that Volkswagen’s head of research and development, Kai Gruenitz, has confirmed that an ID Buzz GTX will go into production for Europe by the end of 2023. “The GTX will be a cool high-performance version with 250 kW (335 hp), a special interior, new exterior colors and some additional features,” he said. Grünitz also mentioned that this high-performance variant would have two engines for all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen has already confirmed that the US version of the ID Buzz will be launched as an extended model with a twin-engine all-wheel drive system. Gruenitz mentioned that the long-wheelbase version for Europe would get the option to rotate captain’s chairs – it’s unknown if that feature would come to America.
GTX branding is already used by Volkswagen for its high-performance electric vehicles in Europe – the ID.4 AWD Pro with two engines and 295 hp currently sold in America will receive the GTX designation in Europe. So America can get the high-performance version of the ID Buzz, it might just be missing the GTX badge.
The US version of the ID Buzz is expected to be unveiled later this year, with sales beginning next year. Whether the exciting GTX variant will make it to America is not yet certain – but we can hope.
